What costs what
Generation is metered, everything running on your own machine is free, and the line between them is worth knowing.
Nothing that runs on your own machine costs credits. That one line covers most of the cost model, and the rest of this page is where the line falls. ## The free half These run in your browser, on your GPU, and cost nothing however many times you do them: - **Remeshing and retopology**, the full three-stage pipeline - **Pathtraced rendering** of a 3D object - **Vectorizing** with Precise Trace - **Sculpting, extruding, inflating** and the rest of the local 3D tools - **Applying a recolour** to a vector, which happens in the browser after the plan arrives - **Assembling audio and video** in the merge suite - **Everything on the canvas itself**: frames, notes, comments, sketches, palettes, moving things around Local work also keeps running while a provider is down, and while another generation is still going. ## The metered half Anything that leaves your machine for a model provider costs credits. Image generation and editing, video, 3D generation from an image or a prompt, texture regeneration, upscaling, audio, and the vision calls that describe or tag an asset. Cost tracks four things: | Driver | Where you feel it | |---|---| | Which model | The single biggest lever, sometimes an order of magnitude between two pills on the same card | | Output size | Pixels for images, resolution for video | | Duration | Video and audio bill by the second | | Count | Though not always linearly, see below | ## The exceptions worth knowing **Sets often cost one run.** The grid tools return up to eight results for a single generation, because the model renders one grid image and Plnty slices it locally. **variations**, **antagonist**, **diverge**, **same-family**, **time-machine** and **close-ups** all work this way. **List expansion is free.** Typing a `{ }` variable and having a model write you twenty options costs nothing. Only the twenty generations that follow are metered. **Reference video seconds bill on top.** On tools that take a video as a reference, the seconds you feed in are billed as well as the seconds you get out. It is the one place where an input costs money. :::note[Why prices move] Credit costs track what providers charge, updated by a daily process rather than set by hand.
